The Design of the Blackjack Table

The blackjack table is a half oval shape. If you look closely at the blackjack table, you will be able to see the type of blackjack that is played there. Indicated on the table are the minimum and maximum bets that are allowed per hand. It should also indicate the payout for blackjack and insurance bets, as well as the basic rules for the dealer such as when he must stand and when he must hit. There should also be a card next to the dealer that contains important rule information for that specific table. Players place their bets into the circle that is indicated on the table in front of their chair.

The cards can be found in the "shoe" that is on top of the blackjack table. The shoe is rectangular in shape and is made from wood and plastic. The shoe generally holds between one and six decks of cards, although it sometimes holds as many as eight. If the blackjack game is only using one deck, this may be held by the dealer, rather than put into the shoe.

Player Seating at the Blackjack Table

The players are seated around the oval portion of the table and the dealer stands behind the straight side of the table with his back to the pit. There is space for five to seven players at every blackjack table. Each player space has a chair and a rectangular box (or circle) drawn onto the table in front of the chair. The seat to the dealer's far left is known as first base and the seat to the dealer's far right is known as third base.

Choosing a Blackjack Table

Understanding the layout of the blackjack table will help you to choose a table to play at. Firstly, of course, you must find a table that has a space available – that is an empty chair in front of a rectangular box. If you are new to the game, you may want to choose a table that you are the only player at as this will allow you the chance to question the dealer regarding rules that you are unsure of, without feeling self conscious. On the other hand, if you prefer to watch other players' moves, you can choose a table with other players. Next, look for a table that has minimum and maximum bets that suit your bankroll. These will be indicated on the table.
