Roulette Etiquette for Live Play – Following Roulette Etiquette

Explaining the basic ways to behave around the roulette table, how to handle your roulette chips, how to react to the roulette dealer and other essentials for the roulette player.

Courtesy

Make sure that you behave in a courteous manner at all times. Do not knock over other player's chips and be respectful to the other players and to the dealer. Do not shout out too loudly in your excitement and literally mind other people's toes. It is not a good idea to come to the roulette table drunk – none of the other players or the dealer will appreciate your behavior. Most importantly, have fun while playing the game and not only will you enjoy yourself, but you will be good company for the other players.

Mind your Chips

Each player has their own individual color-coded chips during a roulette game. This is to avoid player's chips becoming confused with one another. Therefore, make sure that you keep your own chips separate. You cannot join chips together with other players to form a bet. You are on your own and you need to make sure to keep it that way.

Follow the Dealer's Announcements

Players are given approximately one minute to place their bets on the roulette table. The dealer will then spin the wheel and then announce "no more bets." Once the dealer has made his announcement you must not insist on placing a bet. Do not touch your chips from that point. In fact, you must not touch your chips between the time that the dealer announces "no more bets" and payout time. If you do, you may be accused of cheating and be removed, not only from the roulette game, but from the casino as well.

Dress Code

Some top European casinos may require a dress code in order for you to be allowed to play roulette. The fancier the casino, the more formal your dress will need to be. This is uncommon in the United States.

Membership

Some casinos and clubs are private establishments and will require a membership card to allow you on to the premises to play roulette there. Make sure that you have made your preparations beforehand.

Minimum Bets

Minimum bets exist at every table of roulette. Make sure that you place the correct number of chips down on the table to equal the total minimum betting amount.

Tips

Offer to tip the dealer approximately every tenth spin of the wheel. This is especially important if you are on a winning streak. You may want to tip the dealer if he has been helpful to you by explaining something or by reaching out to your chips when you can't reach them. Your tips should correspond to your bets. Some European casinos will not allow tips for the dealer. If you are unsure of the rules, watch the other players for your cue.
